Little Miss Matsi is a live wire! Striking and photogenic, she has a super high energy level and a strong personality. Despite her shyness, she's always a hit with visitors.
Matsi is a 7 year old malamute/wolfdog mix. (Yes, she looks like she's part husky--but there's little to none in her. Her lineage was known...Mom was an F1 mal mix and dad was a malamute or very low content mal mix.) Matsi has not had much handling until recently, but is slowly getting used to leash walks and petting (she still has to be cornered to get the leash on) and she is already starting to look to people to protect her when she is somewhere unfamiliar!
She enjoys toys and stuffies, likes getting attention from people she knows, and loves to race around and play.
Hey Matsi! Wanna play??
She is VERY food motivated, and could easily be trained via positive reinforcement, once she felt safe with you. She'd make a good "first wolfdog" (or a nice project for a dog trainer who wants to sharpen their skills--though she will never be safe offleash, and will probably always require some special consideration). She does have the typical prey drive, so is NOT cat-friendly.
Matsi used to be completely dependent on her mother, but her mother passed away earlier this year and she's had to get used to some new companionship.
She's had several playdates with other dogs, and while she has been nonaggressive and 'polite' with all of them (except for her sister Mika, who she dominates relentlessly), she takes some time to make new friends, and is more interested in what might be going on in her own familiar territory, than in playing with the others. Because of this territorial concern, Matsi will need an enclosure with *extremely* good dig proofing when she moves. She is an excellent digger, and can tear out standard ground wire. She also can jump fairly high and will need a minimum of 7' sturdy fencing to securely contain her. (I can help someone set up a Matsi-proof fence, if necessary.)
Matsi will be spayed before adoption. A home visit and fencing security check are required. She is located in NC and I can transport within a reasonable distance (NC, SC, VA, TN).
