Mika is a lower content spayed female malamute/wolf mix, born in the spring of 2005.
She hasn't had much hands-on until recently, but has been making great progress: already, she has learned to wear a collar and go for leashed walks.
Hmm, this could be worse!
She does slink off when I try to leash her, but she gives up easily and is completely nonaggressive with people, even when cornered and handled. Mika is actually interested in making friends, but she's still very shy until she gets to know you. Mika is food-motivated and treat-training is a great way to build her trust.
I will sit for food...
She's never been indoors, so is not housebroken. Although giving her house time is certainly possible, and might socialise her more easily, she would probably be intimidated by it at first and would need some practice.
A secure outdoor enclosure is mandatory. She's not an escape artist and will stay in 6' or higher chain link, goat panels, etc with minor dig proofing. She will want a companion; currently, she's living with Merlin but he is not companion-dog quality like she is, so she could go to a much more "normal" home.
Mika with Merlin
Mika has been selective about which dogs she likes, in the past, but seems to be getting much more relaxed with new dogs. A male would be a safer bet than a female, of course. She has shown prey drive towards cats and must be kept separate from them.
She loves stuffies, treats, new smells, and is slowly learning to enjoy being brushed and petted. If insecure, she hides in her doghouse--but once she warms up she's very cute and playful! Catch the snowball, Mika!
She would do well as a "first time wolfdog", for a patient person willing to take time to build the relationship and help her over her shyness. I feel she would *really* blossom for a positive-reinforcement, clicker, target style dog trainer and would make an excellent 'project dog'. Mika really is a sweet girl--just unpracticed in her social skills. But, it's never too late for her to learn; you really CAN teach an old dog new tricks.
Here is a video of Mika getting excited, because I'm walking some of the other dogs.
Would you like more info on adding Mika to your family? She is located in NC and I can transport within a reasonable distance (NC, SC, VA, TN). A home visit and fence check (to ensure she doesn't escape) are required. To inquire, contact solowolf_93@yahoo.com.
